NUCA Takes Action to Advance Construction Suicide Prevention Legislation
NUCA is supporting new federal legislation addressing the serious suicide and mental health challenges facing the construction industry.
The Constructing the Path to Suicide Prevention Act (S. 5327) would direct the CDC to conduct a national study of suicide risks among construction workers and identify factors contributing to those risks.
The need is significant as construction has the second-highest suicide risk of any industry. In 2023, for example, nearly 20% of suicides with a reported industry code involved construction workers, despite construction workers representing only about 7% of the U.S. workforce.
The study would examine factors including working conditions, type of construction work, mental health, substance abuse, physical injuries, and access to health care. The findings would be used to develop recommendations for reducing suicide risks in the industry.
As part of his upcoming trip to Capitol Hill to advocate for expanding private activity bonds, NUCA NJ Executive Director Evan Piscitelli will also meet with congressional leaders to advocate for passage of the Constructing the Path to Suicide Prevention Act. This effort reflects NUCA NJ's commitment to addressing the unique safety and mental health challenges facing the construction workforce in New Jersey.
